Pulse: People are Preparing for Off Grid Survival

Pulse: People are Preparing for Off Grid Survival

Last month, we posed the following question to our audience: If necessary, how prepared are you to live off the grid? LANDTHINK.com, an authoritative online resource for advice, knowledge, opinions and trends related to land, is pleased to announce the October LANDTHINK Pulse results. Our informal online survey revealed that 44.5% of those responding considered themselves “somewhat prepared” to live off the grid.

“Off-Grid” or “Sustainable” living is a back-to-the-land movement that does not rely on public utilities. Those who adhere to this lifestyle use nonrenewable resources- power is produced by a solar panel system, wind, or by harvesting rainwater, and food is grown organically. People living self sufficiently dig their own deep wells and install a septic tank system for waste management. Choosing to go completely off the grid is not an easy undertaking, but trends suggest people are increasingly choosing to unplug and live sustainably. Although challenging, it is possible and begins with a strong commitment and finding the right piece of land in a remote location.

To our surprise, our survey revealed that 44.5% of our audience were “somewhat prepared” to live off the grid. Coming in a close second, 39.7% of those responding indicated they were “unprepared” to live off the grid. A mere 15.8% said they were “very prepared”.

People have many different motivations for choosing to live off the grid, such as:

  • A sovereign lifestyle greatly reduces any damage to the Earth’s natural resources, benefiting the environment
  • The high cost of centralized utility systems make living off the grid economically sensible
  • A desire to get in touch with nature, live simply and serenely, and teach their children important life skills
  • Doomsday prepping from fear of terrorism with nuclear or biological weapons, a financial collapse, or catastrophic weather events

Here’s how the final results panned out:

  • As a builder it is my plan to build all my buildings off grid with in the grid area I just don,t think the banks are ready to finance buyers in that way I also think the people need to be better educated

    • I lived for almost 20 years off grid and I am a real estate agent for the last 15 years. I’ve sold multiple, multiple properties that were solar, or off-grid, and it used to be rather easy to do. Banks, for some odd and unusual reason, are making it HARDER to finance even with the whole government “push” toward green energy. I’m not understanding the logic of this, and don’t tell me the gov’t couldn’t make it easier from a banking standpoint. They own the banks, or the other way around, not sure. Thx
